What is jute?
Jute is a special vegetable fiber made from the stem and outer skin of the jute plant. These fibers are rich in cellulose and lignin, making their by-products, such as textiles, tough and durable.
Because the plant is an essential bio source, they are commonly used as raw material in producing eco-friendly textiles such as canvas, hessian, and scrim. These fabrics can be found in clothing, upholsteries, bags, and all sorts of things.
How is jute made?
The process of turning jute plants into fabrics for eco-bags is called retting. In the process, the fibers are extracted by bundling the stems together and submerging them under slow-running water. Once retting is complete, the excess materials are carefully scraped off, and the crucial fibers are painstakingly pulled out from the stem. This delicate process is part of what makes jute bags sustainable!
